Annual Election and Upcoming Meeting

After four years as a BSCL officer --two as vice president, two as president -- it's time for me to step aside as we transition to new leadership. On May 4, we'll conduct our annual election of officers. The full candidates' slate appears below. Please join me in thanking them for agreeing to stand for election.

  • President: Chris Siple
  • Vice President: Gary Mason
  • Recording Secretary: vacant (Please consider volunteering!)
  • Membership Secretary: Joanne Rodewald
  • Treasurer: Jennifer Lis
  • Board Member: Barbara Clemens

Following the election, our guest will be Captain Adrienne Quigley, commander of the Arlington County Police Department's Third District (to which Barcroft belongs). She'll be on hand to discuss the rash of vehicle and residential break-ins we've experienced in the last few weeks.

I'd like to thank our officers and board, as well as Randy Swart and my predecessor, Eric Harold, for their advice and support these last few years. Finally, my sincere thanks to the BSCL membership for allowing me to serve you.

New Developments and Elections

It's been nearly two years since we learned that there were plans afoot to redevelop the Food Star site at Columbia Pike and George Mason Drive. The county board approved the Village Center (as the redevelopment project is called) a year ago, and work is at last slated to begin this summer and last around two years. At April's BSCL meeting, a team from Orr Partners, the Village Center developer, will be on hand to review the project and address the short-term construction, parking, traffic, and noise  challenges we'll need to endure while the work is in progress. As a reminder, this will be a joint meeting of the Barcroft, Alcova Heights, and Douglas Park civic associations.

Don't forget about our upcoming BSCL election on May 4. Our nominating committee and I have begun talking to potential candidates, and to date, someone has agreed to stand for election to our open board slot. We're still on the hunt for our next president, vice president, and recording secretary. Please contact me if you're interested in serving your community in one of these positions for the coming year. We hope to announce our slate of candidates by mid to late April.

Holiday Parties, Sidewalks, Traffic, and More

We had a great turnout for our holiday party on December 1, Thanks to all the organizers, musicians, and storytellers who made it happen. I think the earlier start time was a hit, so I'll recommend that we make that permanent starting next year. This month's other news is a mixed bag...
