Arlington Cable TV Program on Barcroft
"Arlington Reunion: Barcroft and Its Neighbors"
Arlington Cable TV is running a local TV program on Channel 31 titled "Arlington Reunion:
Barcroft and Its Neighbors." The program was taped on March 19, 1998 and will run periodically
on Channel 31. It ran for the first time the week of April 20-26. You can check the
Arlington Cable TV Listings or we will post dates at the bottom of this page, but we seldom
can keep track of when the program will run again.
The program was organized by Sara Collins (former Virginia Room Librarian), Ingrid Kauffman of
the Central Library staff and Barcroft's own Randy Swart. It was taped and edited by Joan Orvis
of the Channel 31 staff, who did a superb job. It runs for an hour.
The program is introduced by Sara Collins. Then Randy does a short intro to
the history of the neighborhood, with some interesting old photos and maps. The main part of the
program consists of reminiscences by a number of former and current Barcroft residents, including:
Frank Peartree (great story about a chicken coop).
Phyllis Kinsey (brought along an old lamp from the Community House),
Susie Wiseman (her mother taught at Barcroft school, spoke about Barcroft dairy).
Col. Bill Wright (remembers the mill burning down, and the Barcroft bus line that became the AB&W Line.
Dr. Earl Cooper (remembered the depression, making grape jelly and raising chickens).
Jackey Snoots (spoke about the bus system).
Ruth Cohen Levin (Shere's grocery store on Columbia Pike, extended credit during the depression).
Carl Costanzo (townhouses on George Mason, house the Lutherans moved from Taylor Street to George Mason).
Bob Potts (Son of Orrie & Esther Potts, who had a big garden and a chicken house).
Bahar Hess (spoke about the Woman's Club of Arlington and its old white-glove Cotillions).
Dr. Charles O'Hara
Blaine Williams
Gloria Quinlan (30 years on 1st Street South, Girl Scout leader).
Bette Clements (realtors call Barcroft a "sleeper" where you get more than you expected).
For the next TV dates, consult the local cable Channel 31 listings. It may be some months before
the normal Channel 31 cycle brings it up again. If you don't have cable but
do have a VHS VCR, you can borrow a copy of the tape from Randy Swart by
emailing him or calling
him at 703-521-2080.
For those of you who remember Anne Noll, we sent her a copy of the tape in
care of her daughter in Florida when it first appeared. Anne passed away on July 4th, 1998.
