Monthly Meeting Minutes
From our Web page
Not great, but better than nothing: our Webmaster's quick takes on what happened at our meetings. Most recent first:
April 1, 2004: We were briefed on the Metro study getting under way of possible transportation systems for Columbia Pike. Light rail? Bus Rapid Transit? Nasty old polluting wearing out Metro busses we already have? Stay tuned, you will have opportunities to comment as the study progresses. Our second item was a courtesy visit by the developers hoping to put a townhouse development at Arlington Boulevard and George Mason Drive, where the Masonic Temple is now. The Temple will stay for at least a while. The plans drew some sharp questions but no outrage. Finally, we talked spring gardening and control of invasive plant species. It was a well-attended meeting.
February 5, 2004: We were briefed on the final recommendations of the Columbia Pike Streetscape Task Force, and the only remaining issues: bike lanes or not, and width of the bus lane. We took a "straw poll" since the turnout was limited by the sleet storm, and it was evenly split. The County Board decided on February 10 to adopt bike lanes only on some stretches, and an 11 foot wide curb lane. Ritch Viola of the County Staff visited to discuss our Safe Routes to Schools sidewalk project on 9th Street between Taylor and Wakefield. We asked for bumped out curbs to preserve large trees along that block and narrow the street a little.
January 8, 2004: Hank Webb, from Webb Construction made a courtesy visit to discuss his plans for building houses on the lot at 701 S. Wakefield (next to Barcroft school). We subsequently learned that the owner would like to both sell the house and split up the rest of the property into two lots. Splitting up the lot so that two homes can be built would require a variance from the County, and the owner has not decided yet whether to do this. We also discussed recent changes to the County bus routes and schedules. County transit staffer Jim Hamre responded to some serious concerns about the quality of the new ART service that replaced our 16X Metrobus.
December, 2004: Annual holiday party, no business ever discussed. Annie Harold recited The Grinch from memory as a green-painted Grinch prowled the room and eventually recanted.
