BSCL Minutes March, 1996 Meeting
County Board Chairman Jim Hunter, Traffic Committee
The monthly meeting of the Barcroft School and Civic League was
held on Thursday, March 7, 1996 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the
Community House.
Special guest speaker for this meeting was Jim Hunter, an
Arlington County Board member. Mr. Hunter spoke on many topics
including economic development and gang violence. He answered
questions from the membership regarding crime, Columbia Pike
revitalization, and language barriers.
Committee Reports
Traffic Committee - Vinnie Millin reported on the
recommendations of the traffic committee. They recommend both
the left and center lanes of the access road along Route 50 be
used for left hand turns and the right lane be used for right
hand turns. The committee also recommends the removal of the
traffic circle at Wakefield and Pershing. The committee will
also be discussing the issue of speeding. The next committee
meeting is on March 25 at Elaine Squeri's at 7:30.
Parade Committee - Mary Ann O'Rourke will set the date for the
first meeting.
Renovation Committee - Jim Kerr reported that the renovation
plan will be ready for presentation at the May meeting. March
18th will be a special meeting to get information ready for the
April newsletter.
Neighborhood Conservation - Dave Michaelson reported that the
public works department and traffic are discussing locations for
the neighborhood entrance signs. Contact Dave regarding street
light improvements. A bond issue is coming up that will provide
additional funds for improvements.
New Business
The Community Service Luncheon will be held on Friday, April
12th. Food donations and volunteers are needed. Contact Randy
Swart if you can help.
One thousand dollars was donated to the renovation fund by
former Barcroft resident Margaret Presson, who has fond memories
of attending dances and church service at the community house.
BSCL is establishing an Annual Service Award to recognize BSCL
members for outstanding service and contribution to the
neighborhood. Forward any ideas to Randy Swart.
The first annual Barbecue Cook Off will take place on Sunday,
April 28th. Dave Michaelson is organizing the event and needs
judges, contestants, and volunteers. Please contact him if you
can help with this event.
