BSCL Minutes
February 1, 1996
The monthly meeting of the Barcroft School and Civic League was
held on Thursday, February 1, 1996 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the
Community House.
Committee Reports
Renovation Committee - Jim Kerr reported on the decisions of the
committee. The ceiling of the Community House will be raised,
the walls will be dry wall with wainscotting around the base of
the room. The door to the left of the stage will be handicap-
accessible, and the kitchen door will be widened. Three light
outlets will be installed on each wall in the main room.
Fundraising will be discussed at the May meeting.
Chris Monek reported that Our Savior Lutheran
Church/School has applied for expansion. BSCL was not consulted.
The county board deferred the decision for 4-5 months.
Conditions for approval consist of appointing a neighborhood
group as a task force. Their use permit will be reviewed in one
year. Chris volunteered to represent BSCL as a correspondent to
the county.
Neighborhood Conservation - David Michaelson reported on a
proposed county plan to improve 7th Road and park in order to
deal with an erosion problem. They will also add lights and
improve the turn-around. 8th Street is 99% complete. David
suggested that we write the county board to discourage future
turn-arounds. A question was raised regarded the new lamps on 8th
Street. David said that 50% of the block must agree to change
the lighting.
Jim Kerr announced that the Columbia Pike revitalization
organization needs volunteers to represent Barcroft. The
Fairlington Civic Association is going to address the helicopter
noise heard in the area.
NEW BUSINESS
Barbara Swart announced that she needs more recipes for the
Barcroft cookbook.
David Michaelson announced the Barcroft Barbecue contest will
take place the first weekend in April.
Guest speaker, Dr. John from Merrifield Garden Center, spoke on
the topic of "Perennials that Grow in the Shade". Questions were
taken from the membership and door prizes were given out courtesy
of Merrifield.
The meeting adjourned at 9:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Lisa Palance
