DRAFT Minutes of the BSCL Meeting
November 1, 2001

Prepared by: Eric Parker

Committee Reports

Traffic Committee (Elaine Squeri):

  • Elaine presented a copy of the official request to the county for traffic calming measures to be placed in the BSCL archives.
  • Elaine provided copies of the petition results, which met the county requirements for approval of our traffic-calming proposal.
  • No news was available on the stop sign to be placed at 3rd & Pershing.
  • The report and statistics information will be posted on the BSCL web site.

Membership (Presented by Peg Lefebvre):

There are approximately 240 new members for a total of approximately 400 members. These numbers are below last year's numbers.

Newsletter (Presented by Pat Williamson):

  • There is a new editor for the newsletter, Christina Cavoli.
  • The new circulation editor, Susan Hunt, would like to hear from people that do not receive their newsletter.

Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee (Presented by Randy Swart)

  • The proposal to incorporate traffic calming measures for 3rd Street and Abingdon Street traffic was too late for this year. Our number one priority reverts to the drainage issues and 4th and Taylor. We will try again for 3rd and Abingdon next year.
  • Sidewalks are being put in at 8th & Wakefield. This was a neighborhood conservation project submitted over a year ago.

Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (Presented by Bryant Monroe)

  • The process is moving along. The county manager is currently reviewing the draft. Board action will take place early next year.
  • The density at Columbia Pike and South Buchanan has been reduced. Additionally, the "node" proposed for Four Mile Run and Columbia Pike has the potential of being very nice.

Treasury (Presented by Gary Lefebvre)

  • The Community House fund is at $26822. $2500 has been slated for the utility building and $15,500 for the handicapped ramp. Both the utility building and the handicapped ramp projects could use volunteers to get these moving again.
  • The general fund has approximately $4200, with most income being generated by community house rentals. Additionally, advertising income for the newsletter is nearly matching printing costs.

General Announcements (Presented by Pat Williamson)

The next meeting is holiday party!

At this point, the floor was turned over to Alan Muchnick with the Washington Regional Network, who gave a presentation on urban sprawl and transportation issues in the DC area.
