Crime statistics in July - the first number listed is for the 3rd District, the second is for the County:
Burglary, commercial 2/12
Burglary, residential 11/28
Exposure 0/3
Larceny from auto 41/95
PeepingTom 0/3
Rape 2/5
Robbery, street 2/5
[no other types of robberies last month]
Sexual assault 1/5
Larceny of vehicle 27/56
The suspects in both street robberies involved acquaintances of the victims. The rapes involved either an acquaintance or were statutory [in this case, an adult having sex with a juvenile].
It appears the thefts of Grand Cherokees have slowed, at least temporarily. Based on that trend, Lt. Caldwell was able to organize a surveillance detail. In addition to the arrest of the suspect pursued into the District, related in my last newsletter, other arrests have been made.
On 7/23, two days after the above arrest, security officers in Fairlington alerted us to three suspicious subjects and their vehicle . 3rd District plainclothes officers along with several officers from our Tactical Unit [plainclothes, anti-street crimes] followed the subjects until they left the County. They later returned and were apprehended in the 4100 block of S. Four Mile Run Drive as they attempted to steal tires from a vehicle.
On 7/25, the 3D officers, the entire Tactical Squad, and the Criminal Investigations Division south side Auto Squad investigators were on surveillance and at 02:30 a.m. observed four subjects in two Grand Cherokees acting suspiciously in the Fairlington area. Marked police units were called to assist and when they attempted to stop the suspects, one vehicle sped away. It later crashed and the occupants escaped. One arrest was made from the other vehicle. Both vehicles had been stolen. It was discovered that the suspects had tampered with a Cherokee in Fairlington.
During the early morning of 8/14, we received a call about the attempted theft of a Cherokee from the 4700 block of S. 29th St. A vehicle was discovered driving without lights on Arlington Mill Drive and was pursued briefly before the suspects bailed out. With the assistance of K-9, all three were eventually apprehended after an hour-long search. Detectives were called in to interview these suspects and it is hoped they will be connected to other thefts.
Effective August 29th, a number of 3D officers will be promoted:
Lt. Rebecca Hackney will be promoted to Captain.
Sergeants Linda Harmsen and Michael Dunne will be promoted to Lieutenant.
Officers Matt Heimberger, Michael Austin, Jerome Lee, and David Reiten will be promoted to Corporal.
Congratulations and best of luck to all of them in their new roles.
Hope to see you at the County Fair!
Be safe.
