Subject: News from the 3rd District - 19th Edition - June 11, 1999
3D Crime in May:
Burglary commercial - 4
Burglary residential - 8
Exposure 1
Larceny from auto 25
Rape/Sodomy 2
Robbery bank 1
Robbery commercial 2
Robbery street 2
Larceny of vehicle 15
There are no patterns involved in any of the above cited crimes. Several of them may turn
out to be false reports. In the one exposure case, a resident flags down an officer who
stops the suspect. The suspect had driven through the 4100 block of S. Four Mile Run Drive
four times exposing himself. An ID was made and the suspect arrested. He resides in the
Fairlington area.
Last night, 11 people graduated from the second session of the Citizen's Police Academy.
According to the graduates, the Academy provided them with a fascinating look at the ACPD
and police work, in general. If you are interested in attending our next session, which
will be held sometime next fall, please call Sgt. Regina Heising at 228-4247.

Our bike patrol officers have made a number of arrests for "quality of life"
type violations. We have heard about concerns for these violations on numerous occasions.
Some of their activity for May [note - one bike officer was on leave for almost the entire
month but we had several other part-timers filling in]:
10 arrests for possessing alcohol in a park
2 arrests for littering
2 vendor violations
1 arrest for urinating in public
4 arrests for drinking in public
1 arrest for drunk in public
2 arrests for possession of marihuana
1 arrest for possession of fraudulent ID
1 arrest for driving while suspended and 1 for reckless driving
3 different homeless camps were disbanded after those responsible for them cleaned the
area
Numerous activities at special events and school lunch hours and closings.
We registered 32 bikes at the Columbia Pike Blues Festival. Thanks to Randy Swart, Rich
Viola and our Auxiliary Police Officers for helping with the registration drive. We hope
to repeat this effort at future special events held in the 3rd District and elsewhere in
the County.
Last year, we had some thefts of potted plants and hanging baskets from front porches. I
know that some of these items are very expensive and, unfortunately, easy to carry off.
Two things I thought might help regarding these thefts. One step would be to fasten
hanging baskets to the hooks on which they are hung with some monofilament fishing line or
other unobtrusive string. Should someone try to remove the basket, they would find it
difficult in the short amount of time they are willing to be exposed. The next suggestion
might not prevent thefts but would aid in their return should they be recovered. This
involves writing your address on the bottom of containers that rest on the floor. If an
attempt was made to resell stolen items, the presence of such information might tip off
potential buyers [who, hopefully, would not want to buy stolen plants].
During the last week of May a list of 64 inoperative street lights was forwarded to the
Virginia Electric Power and Light for repair. As you know, they quickly repaired the
lights we brought to their attention last December. I will keep you informed on this
issue.
Do not forget to check www.crimereports.com for additional crime statistics and press
releases. You can also contact Cpl. Justin McNaull at 228-4050 to be placed on the
Department's e-mail list for daily crime reports.
