Welcome to Barcroft Neighborhood
BSCL Letter to Arlington CountyBuchanan and Columbia Pike Intersection October 8, 2003
Mr. R. S. Kem, Director Dear Mr. Kem and Ms. Bell: At our last civic association meeting, Richard Hartman from the Department of Public Works (DPW) Planning Division and William Roberts, the Capital Projects Coordinator for the Dept. of Community Planning, Housing and Development, attended to discuss proposed improvements to the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. Buchanan Street and to solicit input from our community. Pedestrian safety and congestion at this intersection have been a major concern of the Barcroft community for a long time. We are extremely pleased that the County is addressing these issues with the planned improvements for the intersection. At this meeting, we had discussions about potential improvements to traffic flow at the intersection that would improve pedestrian safety as well as alleviate some of Barcroft's concerns about traffic volumes in our neighborhood. The Barcroft School and Civic League requests that DPW and DCPHD make South Four Mile Run (Minor) one-way southbound away from Columbia Pike, and route traffic from there to S. Wakefield Street for access to Columbia Pike. This could be done on a trial basis to evaluate whether this alternative would be effective at increasing safety and traffic flow at this intersection. Thank you for including our neighborhood in the planning process for these improvements. We look forward to continued support of the County's efforts to improve safety and beautify the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. Buchanan Street. Sincerely,
Eric M. Harold, President
cc: County Board, Ron Carlee, Richard Hartman, William Roberts
