Welcome to Barcroft Neighborhood
APAH is Rehabilitating Buchanan GardensThe Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing is rehabilitating the Buchanan Gardens apartment complex in Barcroft. The apartments, located on Buchanan St just above Columbia Pike, will be dedicated affordable housing units. The Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing held a very informative briefing for Barcrofters on April 6th, 2011. They are redeveloping Buchanan Gardens apartments on the hill where Buchanan St. meets Columbia Pike. They gave us early warning about such items as construction worker parking, temporary pedestrian and vehicular circulation and the schedule of construction. Their contractors, who also attended, are renting a parking lot for their workers' cars, and they will be keeping the apartment parking open in evenings even when they excavate for new utility lines. Trucks will enter and exit via Columbia Pike, not through the neighborhood, but expect some congestion on the Buchanan St. hill as they widen the sidewalks. They may be able to screen the temporary construction trailers from the park, and will be pulling back the existing fence after construction is finished in late 2012. They will adhere to Arlington rules on construction noise, and will not be driving pilings and shaking houses as the Arlington Mill construction is now doing. Residents will be relocated from building to building as the construction progresses. Julie Rotherham is chairing the liaison group that will keep touch with APAH during the construction period. On April 28, 2011 APAH held their groundbreaking ceremony, kicking off the rehabilitation phase. Their financing is all in place now. Three buildings are to be rebuilt (kitchens, baths, windows, a thorough rehab) in the first phase. Barcroft supported APAH's increased densityWhile APAH was planning the rehab, they decided to ask for zoning permission to add some bedrooms to Buchanan Gardens units. There is a big demand for two and three-bedroom units that are affordable. The BSCL took a vote and sent the County a letter approving the APAH application.APAH's Site PlansFrom an APAH presentation to BSCL members on April 6, 2011.
